Tankerville Mine Project
|
What is already there? The Tankerville
Lead Mine near Pennerley is a Scheduled Monument and it was donated to the
Trust in December 1996. Watson’s Shaft engine house is probably one of the
best remaining in Shropshire, together with its associated chimney which
still stands to its full height. The shaft was the deepest in the orefield at
1,690ft and has been capped.
There are less remains of the adjacent Ovenpipe
Shaft engine house and chimney but there are some excellent ore bins and a
reservoir, as well as foundations of other buildings. |
What will happen to it?
The mine is owned
by the Shropshire Mines Trust and we have decided to create a low key
interpretation site which is open free of charge to the public. It is hoped
that the site can then be interpreted by signs with occasional staffing by
volunteers on special occasions.
One of our main
obstacles is the lack of convenient parking for visitors and lack of access
to the Ovenpipe Shaft area since there is no public right of way to
this. |
|
What work has already been done? Thanks to funding from
English Heritage, Shropshire County Council and South Shropshire District
Council, it was possible to make the shaft safe and to fit tie rods to
prevent further damage to the engine house. The Conservation Area Partnership
scheme later paid for the work to rebuild the Watson’s engine house, ore bins
and Ovenpipe engine house and chimney. |
How can you help?
Working meets are
held to carry out preservation work, etc. If you wish to
help, contact Steve Holding (T. 01952-417483). For more details
